Avinash Patwardhan, MD

Avinash Patwardhan is a non-practicing OB & GYN surgeon with 17 years background in active medical practice and 14 years in health outcomes, public health programs evaluation research, specializing in research design, methodologies and systems analysis as applied to the field of health and wellness. He has worked and published for the W.H.O. on ‘Traditional Medicines” and has taught up to the PhD level.

He holds a Masters in Health Education from University of Kentucky with a focus on health, wellness and stress management; a Post graduate diploma in Obstetrics & Gynecology; and a MD in general practice. He still holds a medical practice license in India, is a fellow of the American Institute of Stress, is a Certified Health Education Specialist (CHES) and is an Experienced Registered Yoga Teacher with Yoga Alliance USA (ERYT500) and is a member of International Association of Yoga Therapists.

Apart from his work with the W.H.O., he is well published in peer reviewed journals and has made numerous conference presentations. He has also made invited presentations on the topics of “Ayurveda” the India’s traditional medicine and of ‘Yoga”.

He has served as honorary pro-bono consultant (Obstetrics, Gynecology and Sexology) in many institutions in India. He is a life member of Indian Science Congress Association.

In his non-professional life, Avinash is a published story writer and a poet (an Anthology of poems published in 1992), plays Flute (Indian classical music) and Tabla (Indian drums), and as a polyglot knows Sanskrit among six languages. Mathematics, physics and history are his passionate hobbies.

His first encounter with Yoga (the Geeta) was when he was three and a half years old. In 1998 he wrote a manuscript that developed a stress diathesis model of violence and this work was endorsed by many, including a Nobel laureate.

He teaches “yoga” in his community and loves speaking on the wisdom of ancient Indian philosophy, particularly of Ayurveda, Yoga and Samkhya.
